Cytogenetic Technologists

Analyze chromosomes or chromosome segments found in biological specimens, such as amniotic fluids, bone marrow, solid tumors, and blood to aid in the study, diagnosis, classification, or treatment of inherited or acquired genetic diseases. Conduct analyses through classical cytogenetic, fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) or array comparative genome hybridization (aCGH) techniques.

Primary Directive

Perform cytogenetic analysis to identify chromosomal abnormalities.

Execution Steps
  1. 1

    Prepare biological specimens for analysis

Prepare specimens such as blood or amniotic fluids for chromosome examinations.

  2. 2

    Cultivate and harvest cell cultures

Select appropriate culturing systems and harvest cell cultures using mitotic arrestants.

  3. 3

    Analyze chromosomes under microscope

Count and identify structural abnormalities by viewing culture slides through microscopes.

  4. 4

    Summarize and report test results

Summarize test results and report findings to appropriate authorities.

  5. 5

Maintain laboratory equipment and quality control
